Name: Taf Squires |
| I would like to nominate Taf Squires as an Outstanding Woman You Should Know. She has been a counselor at TC3 for 25 years, working with students of all ages and backgrounds to support their progress toward academic and personal goals. Taf's amazing clinical skills, warmth and authenticity shine in all she does. In addition to her dynamic and highly professional counseling work, Taf initiated and has organized the International Women's Day panel that occurs at TC3 every March 8th for the last 20+ years. She invites TC3 international women students to speak about the circumstances of women in their countries. It is always a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together around our differences and our similarities. Taf has worked closely with Nursing faculty to provide Health Career fairs that support nursing students' career exploration and employment opportunities while meeting the employment needs of so many local hospitals and other health care facilities. These kinds of programs are rarely publicized beyond the individuals involved yet impact our community in large ways. Think of the talented students who become, and stay, community members and the wonderful nursing care we all receive from them. Taf's contributions to the TC3 community are innumerable, but her work also extends directly into the community. She is a dedicated member of the Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services Board of Directors where she works tirelessly to promote this vital service to our community. On a more personal note, Taf raised her two talented and accomplished daughters in our community, both of whom are now doctors. She has been ahead of the curve focusing on sustainability, very proudly getting the "trash mom" award for sending in the most recycled stuff for art projects when her daughters were at BJM. Taf is my friend and my colleague and I can not imagine a more appropriate and deserving woman to recognize for her contributions to our community. Nominated by Amy Trueman "I nominate Taf Squires because of loving, caring approach and sunny attitude she brings to all she does. I primarily know Taf as a member of the Board of Suicide Prevention & Crisis Service, where I am the Executive Director. Taf so so caring and enthusiastic about the agency and its mission. She is a very active participant in our Development Committee, often leading the board to "get out there" and show their support of SPCS. .......Her enthusiasm is contagious! And she does all this is her quiet, smiling, exuberant manner. I'm sure that she is a great support for students at TC3. I think that naming her one of the 20 women you should know in 2010 is exciting because she is so often very private about how generously she supports important causes such as SPCS. I hope she makes your final list this year." Nominated by Jennifer Streid-Mullen I am delighted to nominate Taf Squires as one the 20 Outstanding Women. I've come to know Taf through our work together on the Board of Directors of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service for the past three years. Our Board is recruited for special skills; Taf's of course is her professional experience as a psychological counselor for TC3 students. More than that, our board is ambitious. Our reach is high, and Taf has always been there to help--whether it is to reach out to her peer psychologists or to merchants for financial support or to encourage her neighbors and friends to become involved directly with the agency's special events. She is fearless, gentle, persuasive, or as an acquaintance says, "No one ever says 'no' to Taf." She and her husband Fred Madden have two wonderfully accomplished daughters and provide a model of blending one's professional and personal life very successfully, including their artistic interests--Taf's in jewelery making and Fred, recently in photography and printmaking. Taf is the epitome of a woman who manages to balance her life while always being mindful of the needs of others. I commend her to your committee for its consideration. Nominated by Caroline Cox (President, Board of Directors, Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service of Tompkins County) I am aware that Amy Trueman has nominated Taf Squires for the award. I would like to support that nomination. I have worked with Taf for the past 10 years. We are both counselors in the Counseling, Career and Transfer Services Office at TC3. I know that Taf has made a powerful impact on students in helping them make significant changes in their lives. The work that Taf has done will not land her in the headlines because it is "quiet", confidential and personal work. Yet it has made a profound impact on the lives of hundreds (if not thousands)of unnamed people over the nearly 3 decades that she has been in her role at the college. She is a supportive colleague and a knowledgeable professional. I feel fortunate to work with her and be able benefit from her wisdom. Nominated by Joan G. Donovan Taf Squires is one of my favorite people and favorite co-workers and, no surprise, I'm not alone. Taf is a presence as in: present, paying attention, awake to others and their suffering, joy, and all that lies between. I've worked alongside her -- she as a counselor, I, as PACE Coordinator -- for five years and from the start, she's touched me with her bottomless compassion, tireless advocacy, honesty and tuned sense of humor. Early on, I learned of her support, financial and emotional, for the politically persecuted. She aided one political asylee bring his entire family here and connected them with my program and services, the kind of connections she's made for many people, linking their circumstances to those people and agencies who could help. Making such connections are as natural for Taf as breathing or laughing. Because she serves for service' sake, it was over time that I learned how far her reach extended. On campus, many years ago, she started International Woman's Day and since it's inception, it's been one of the most attended, appreciated and overall, moving events for student, staff and faculty alike. She's long worked with Suicide Prevention, sitting on the board as well as raising funds. She's enthusiastically set up TC3 alumni panels to link present students with either mentors or simply, ideas for themselvees and their futures. Taf is nothing short of passionate about people and helping them discover the breadth of themselves. She's long defended the disenfranchised, offering them ways to empower themselves. Taf Squires is phenomenal, a gift to all -- and there are MANY -- whom she has touched. Nominated by Alexis My supervisor, Amy Trueman, recently nominated my colleague, Taf Squires, for this award. I have worked with Taf for seven years at Tompkins Cortland Community College in the Counseling, Career and Transfer Services Department. During the previous twelve years, Taf and I consulted with each other frequently regarding students' needs and how to best address them at the college and in the community. Taf is a talented, skillful, dedicated counselor who has assisted countless numbers of students through their difficult and challenging times. She has quietly and informally assisted countless numbers of less fortunate members of the Ithaca/Tompkins community. She has recently served the community more formally in being a member of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service's Board of Directors. I heartily and thoughtfully support Taf Squires' nomination for the "Outstanding Women..." Award. She and her contributions to others are most certainly OUTSTANDING. Nominated by Meg Garvey |
