Name: Joan Portzline |
| I would like to recommend Joan Portzline for the "20Outstanding Women You Should Know" award. I have known Joan since childhood and continue to be impressed with what she offers her family, community, co-workers, and clients. Joan graduated from Dryden High School and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Ithaca College. She was awarded the Herbert U. Nelson Memorial Fund Scholarship from the National Association of Realtors allowing her to attend Syracuse University's Martin J. Whitman School of Management. She earned her Masters of Business Administration while majoring in Real Estate. Immediately following Graduate School Joan was employed with Yaman Real Estate. She worked at Yaman for three years, and then opened her own office. Joan served and helped many families during the 32 years she owned and operated "Joan Portzline Real Estate". Joan recently retired from real estate sales, but continues her dedication to helping others. She opened a new business which involves helping others reach their financial goals and dreams. Using her educational background and the experience gained from operating a successful real estate firm, she offers others expertise in customizing a business in which they can work part-time to provide a significant secondary income alongside what they are currently doing. In these times of economic turmoil this proven business plan can turn into a full time business for many people, and give them the financial security they are looking for. I have been most impressed with the time Joan has dedicated to me and other business owners on her team. With her coaching and mentoring Joan has helped many of us grow both personally and financially. Each of us have developed personal characteristics such as speaking and writing skills, overcoming the fear of being successful, and more importantly building confidence and self esteem. She works closely with each individual until they are ready to successfully run their own business. Throughout her career Joan has always found time to be active in the community. She is very active in Rotary Club of Ithaca. She has chaired various committees in Rotary including the International Services Committee for the Ithaca Club and the International Chairman for Rotary District 7170. While a junior in high school she was a Rotary Exchange Student to Heredia Costa Rica. In 2000 she was chosen by the District to be the Leader of a Group Study Exchange to Turkey. This consisted of a five member team of business people from each country, who during the month long exchange shared with their host country, their culture and ideas and business practices. On returning home she organized a much needed Matching Grant with Bursa, Turkey to pay for and install a heart monitor in a Children's Hospital there. Her other community volunteer activities have included serving as Public Relations Chair for Baden-Powell Boy Scout Council which covered Tompkins, Cortland and Tioga Counties. She was on the Board of Directors of Human Service Coalition and was Chair of their Budget and Administration Committee in 99-2000. She was on the Board of Directors H.O.M.E.S., a not for profit organization providing housing and supportive services for adults with disabilities and was on the Board of Directors for The Visiting Nurse Services of Tompkins County. Joan has been part of the flying community since the mid- 1970's. She obtained FAA Private Pilots License with multiple ratings including a Sea Plane Rating and has flown a variety of aircraft. She built an Experimental two - seat Sport Plane and test flew it herself. At this time she obtained her Ultra light Instructors License. She is a past member of the East Hill Flying Club and Past President of our local Experimental Aircraft Association, EAA Chapter 811. For over 20 years Joan, with a group of others, bred and raised Nationally recognized Appaloosa horses. Joan handled the Stallions and Mares, did vet work, cleaned stalls, grooming, cared for Foals and did training. She has also been active in the Republican Party serving in such capacities as Village of Dryden Trustee, Town Chairman, and County Republican Chairman. She worked as Campaign Chairman for Senator Jim Seward and as Chairman for a NYS Assembly Race. To add to the many accomplishments in Joan's life, she married Daniel J. Armitage in July 2005. She recently became a grandmother, and has added yet another life she will dedicate her time and love to. Joan is an incredible lady, friend, and business partner, and certainly is deserving of this prestigious award. Thank you for your consideration. Nominated by Cynda Farnham |
