Name: Jane Miller |
| I am delighted to have the opportunity to nominate Jane Miller for recognition as one of 20 Outstanding Women You Should Know. Jane has worked tirelessly as the Race Director for the Cayuga Lake Triathlon. This race is considered to be one of the very best run triathlons in the country. Competitors have a great time and the race is a wonderful community event. Because the race is set on a beautiful course, it very effectively promotes the Finger Lakes Region as a summer travel destination. Jane works hard to get this message out. The corps of volunteers who help with the race are amazing and most of them are Jane's friends, or quickly become Jane's friends. As a result of her service as race director, Jane is a key resource for many athletes, of all athletic persuasions and levels of accomplishment, in this area. She knows everything and everybody. Go to a function, like the Women Swimmin' event and find out! She can't walk 10 steps without being greeted by someone. Jane is always willing to help anyone out by providing information or encouragement. When I was considering entering the triathlon (being totally out of condition at the time), I remember her saying to me "You can do it Judy!". And I did. I owe it to Jane. Nominated by Judith A. Appleton Jane Miller gets my whole-hearted endorsement as an Outstanding Woman. Ms. Miller is the race director of the Cayuga Lake Triathlon. For the last 7 years, The CLT entices over a thousand athletes from across the country to meet and compete in this tri-sport event. Jane has a full time job at Cornell, yet enthusiastically takes on the responsibilities of organizing the CLT. Many of her vacations are spent attending race director clinics, with an eye to improving her skills. As the date approaches, the job she does becomes a full-time commitment. I compete in up to 10 triathlons each summer, and have found that CLT is the best organized. Jane organized dozens of volunteers, works with state and local governments to assure course availability and safety, arranges for food (and ice cream!) for the athletes after the event. No detail is too small. Last year, for example, I lost my goggles as I galloped out of the swim into the transition area. Jane herself sorted through the lost and found items and returned them to me. Every athlete feels important, and Jane is cheerful and upbeat despite the demands of the task. This event brings athletes and their families to the area, a big boon to the local tourist, retail and hospitality industries. I was honored to be selected as one of the 2009 Outstanding Women. As I left the Expo last May, I thought 'Jane should be here!' She is definitely an Outstanding Woman of Tompkins County. Nominated by Nancy Almann, D.C. Jane Miller deserves the title of 'Outstanding Woman!' I've been competing in triathlons for several years. Jane is the race director of the Cayuga Lake Triathlon, the first I ever completed. Based on my great experience at that race, I mistakenly assumed that all others would be as well organized. Not so! The CLT is a great event with a beautiful course, dozens of volunteers, and excellent organization. It is the premier triathlon in upstate New York, and it's because of Jane's hard work and focus. Jane works with the Ithaca Triathlon Club to make the CLT an amazing event. Every concern an athlete has is addressed. Each athlete, whether a seasoned competitor or a 'newbie' is treated with respect and generosity. Jane who volunteers her time is always cheerful, polite and professional, even with the most testy and stressed of athletes. As a triathlete, I want to concentrate on doing my best in each race. The amazing, demanding, and time-consuming job Jane does in bringing over 1,000 athletes together and then safely back over the finish line is a testament to her dedication. Nominated by Gene Egan Jane Miller has been the race directer for the Cayuga Lake Triathlon since it's first year in 2003, which currently brings in over 700 athletes and hundreds of spectators and volunteers to Taughannock Falls State Park the 1st weekend every August. Jane has been the driving force behind the races success with her attention to detail, hours of preperation throughout the year, and willingness to maintain her Directer Certification with USAT, the National Triatlon governing body. The USAT was so impressed with Jane and her race comittee's success, The Cayuga Lake Triathlon was picked to host the National Sprint distance race 2 years ago. This brought in some of the best triathletes in the country. The Cayuga Lake Tri and Jane's efforts have touched the lives of many, from elite athletes to ordinary folks that just wanted to stay in shape and try something challenging. Jane Miller is definitely a "woman you should know"! Nominated by Mark Vallely I am writing to nominate Jane Miller as one of 20 women you should know. As race founder and director of the Cayuga Lake Triathlon, Jane has dedicated HUGE amounts of her free time over the last 8 years to making the race a premier athletic event in our county. The event has inspired hundreds of local athletes (and non-athletes) to improve their fitness and test their courage on the beautiful swim-bike-run course in Taughannock Falls State Park. At the same time, the race has attracted thousands of dollars in revenue to the county as athletes travel from all across the nation to compete in what has been recognized as one of the best organized events of its kind in the country. Apart from her hard work and dedication, Jane leads with a smile. She is unfailingly gracious and humble, always seeking to give the credit for a job well done to those around her. The Cayuga Lake Triathlon would not exist without Jane Miller. Its overwhelming success is a direct reflection of Jane's determination and spirit. Nominated by Wendy Tarlow Dear Cayuga Radio Group, I just heard about your "20 Outstandng Women" of this year award. My nomination is for Jane Miller, who is the race director for the Cayuga Lake Triathlon. This race is held early every August at Taughannock Park. I compete in a number of triathlons every summer (7 last year). Jane's race is without a doubt the best organized of any that I've done. From radio contact between volunteers and mobile bike repair on the bike course, to a well-marked swim course (lots of bouys!) to a large, well-organized transition zone, the focus on detail allows the competitors to focus on competing, not worry about safety. Jane organizes dozens of volunteers throughout the spring and summer in order to organize this event. She's always generous, cheerful and positive, even when dealing with grumpy and stressed out athletes. She's got my vote for Outstanding Woman! Nominated by Steven T. Burke For the whole 7 years of its existence, Jane Miller has been the race director for the annual Cayuga Lake Triathlon held at Taughannock State Park.Under Jane's leadership, this race has become one of the premier triathlons in central New York. This annual event is incredibly well organized. The number of fantastic volunteers she is able to recruit is a testament to how well respected she is. The race has grown more and more every year under her direction. This event brings many people to Ithaca every August to thoroughly enjoy one of the most spectacular state parks in New York. All while undertaking the leadership of this race, Jane also has a full time job at Baker Institute at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine where she has spent her career. Jane is an avid birder, an incredible cook and a loyal friend. She is definitely someone people in Ithaca should know! Nominated by Gail Sullivan |
